PORTRAITS
It is seldom easy to make a truly memorable portrait. In a photographer’s career, the distance between truly satisfying photographs can be immense, measured in years or in thousands of miles. No picture is ever quite good enough. I find myself stalking the elusive goal of “capturing the spirit and essence of another human being,”but falls short because there is so much more to say and so much more that is felt. But though my doubt is a constant companion, so is my desire to connect with people- to capture something consequential about another person in a portrait. Choosing the images for this portfolio have been the most difficult task of all. I believe that a portrait is successful if it reveals character and a story, but this is a tall order. Is it ever really possible to fill it adequately? A person is far too complex to be revealed in any single instant. A suggestive glimpse is probably all we can ever hope for. My choices within accept that proposition.
