IMPRESSIONISTIC
The colors so strong and brash, their application so spontaneous and rough – that this school of painters were immediately christened Les Fauves or the wild beasts. These images and the method I developed to create a rather wild emulation of this style result in a subjective and creative use of color. It creates an atmosphere and a decorative intent rather than a descriptive scene. The idea explored is that these images should evoke emotional sensations through form and color. Matisse clarifies this objective: “What I am after, above all, is expression…I am unable to distinguish between the feeling I have for life and my way of expressing it…The chief aim of color should be to serve expression as well as possible.”
